Easily reached by a picturesque train ride along the lake, Einsiedeln is a charming town in the hills that’s dominated by an enormous monastery.
Well worth a visit for its history and culture, the town is also a good starting point for a variety of hikes whether you would like a gentle stroll or a challenging climb.
Popular trails include the Sihlsee route and the Mythen peak among many others, or you can hire e-bikes and mountain bikes at the tourist office.
Located at the end of Lake Zurich, the historic town of Rapperswil is an ideal day trip destination by train, ferry or bike.
Although it’s small, there’s plenty to keep you occupied: the Stadtmuseum offers a well-presented version of the town’s fascinating (and ancient) history, and you should leave enough time to take a wander across the preserved wooden bridge across the lake.
Round off the day with lunch at one of cafés in the beautiful main square and a stroll up to the castle for photos.
A quick train ride away, Baden has spent more than 2000 years as a leading spa destination.
The town is blessed with sulphurous mineral springs that bubble out at a consistent temperature of 47 °C and mean you are spoiled for choice of spa opportunities.
Once you’ve explored the historic centre, take the glass elevator down to the river and see if you can spot the sculptures on the shady trail that runs along the banks of the Limmat.
Not far from Zurich, the region around Schaffhausen is home to the Rhine Falls, a spectacular natural wonder that’s easily reached by public transport or a tourist train from Neuhausen am Rheinfall.
If you’re in the mood for a historical setting, two castles in the area (Schloss Laufen and Schlössli Worth) provide you with romantic lunch venues. There are plenty of opportunities to explore the river on a guided canoe tour, or make time for a leisurely stroll round the beautifully-preserved medieval towns of Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein.
Uetliberg – Adliswil
Visible from almost every angle in Zurich, Üetliberg is the highest peak in Zurich and the best place to get a good view on a sunny day.
A 6km panoramic hiking trail starts from the foot of the viewing tour and meanders along the ridge towards Felsenegg, where you can take a gondola back down. Start by taking the S10 train up to the top of Üetliberg, and don’t forget your camera: on a clear day, the lake views are exceptional.
