Founded back in 1956, The American School in Switzerland is the oldest American boarding school in Europe and is endorsed by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC) and the European Council of International Schools (ECIS).
Its large 9-acre campus ideally sits over Lake Lugano and is home to historic 17th century buildings as well as modern high-tech facilities like the Campo Science Center.
The school currently enrolls 700 international students from pre-kindergarten to postgraduate – of which 260 between the ages of 12 and 19 are boarders – and prides itself on welcoming more than 65 nationalities into its classrooms.
In fact, its academic programs is a statement to the school’s support for diversity and multiculturalism. In Elementary School, students follow the Core Knowledge curriculum, and in both Elementary and Middle School they can choose to enroll in the Italian Section and earn a bilingual education. In High School, they can follow individual Advanced Placement towards the American High School Diploma or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, both of which grant access to higher education in the USA and abroad.
The Extensive Fine Arts program is particularly noteworthy for students with a keen interest in Drama, Music, and Visual Arts. And the Academic Travel Program offers students the opportunity to widen their horizons not just outside the classroom but outside Switzerland and Europe, giving them the opportunity to make a difference in other communities and helping them become tolerant, global citizens with a deep understanding of the world.
During the summer, the school offers intensive language courses, as well as Visual & Performing Arts camps, and adventure camps.
