Overview
Stiftsschule Engelberg is presently one of the leading private educational institutions in Switzerland for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 19. The school is a prestigious Catholic boarding and day school, and it’s open and tolerant towards people of other faith and culture. The school teaches Christian values according to the Benedictine tradition as an abbey school. It offers a short and long-term Gymnasium (middle and high school), which is completed with the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the bilingual Matura (German / English). With a wide range of educational programs, the school helps students to develop academic, personal and social skills they need to learn, live and work in the globalized world. Over half of the students live in the boarding house, an outstanding environment that seamlessly complements what they learn in school. Students in the boarding school have the opportunity of indulging in joint extracurricular activities and spend free days together.
Academics
Gymnasium program
The school offers both four-year and a six-year Gymnasium program that culminates in a bilingual Swiss Matura certificate (German and English) and with the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma. Stiftsschule Engelberg is an IB World School that provides a high-school scheme of work that prepares the students for their universities' education in Switzerland and abroad.
Secondary School (IOS)
Stiftsschule Engelberg partners with the municipality of Engelberg in its vocationally-oriented Secondary School program - the Integrierte Orientierungsschule (IOS). The students can either attend grades 7 to 9 alongside mentoring offered by the boarding program, or get transferred into the short term Gymnasium program after their grade 8 or 9. The duration of this short-term study is a four-year program.
Boarding
The boarding section provides more than the scholastic ability seen in most schools. The boarding community has a supervised study plan but it is also a place for living and learning independently, enabling students to take on additional responsibility.
Living together in Stiftsschule Engelberg encourages students to develop individually without missing out on a secure framework for learning. It also provides insights into the weakness and strength of every child. There is time for relaxing, spiritual contemplation, theatre, sports activities, and music. The weekends are free for students to pursue club and recreational activities or experience a complete family life. A host family accommodates a student who cannot go home for the weekend.
Extracurricular Activities
There is a variety of opportunities for students to take part in sports and music activities. There is a Stiftschor (monastery choir), or school orchestra for students who desire to play any orchestral instrument. The extracurricular activities include rowing, weight training, excursions, hikes, golf, tennis, skiing, and trips.
