Museum for Modern Art Geneva

Located in the heart of the city, housed on the former premises of an industrial building belonging to the City of Geneva, Mamco is Switzerland’s largest and youngest museum devoted to contemporary art.

A stroll through the museum’s four floors will bring the visitor to view artistic works of the past 40 years through temporary exhibitions, or rooms displaying its collections of over 3000 works. Mamco, the museum of modern and contemporary art, opened in Geneva in 1994 and has since developed a new type of museum dedicated to showing the art of our times.

Working essentially with art produced over the last forty years, Mamco’s activities are based on the idea of the museum as a global exhibition alternating temporary shows and displays of the collections in a dynamic manner. Also, Mamco’s exhibitions frequently refer to the various ways of displaying art: a collector’s apartment, white cube, artist studio, warehouse.

Three times a year, the museum affirms anew its global proposal, as a new step in its on-going construction. Today, Mamco operates from a collection of 3000 works of art, of which over 1300 items belong to the museum’s collection.

Within fifteen years, more than 350 exhibitions have been displayed over 3500 m2. Mamco has shown solo exhibitions of Claudio Parmiggiani, Martin Kippenberger, Jim Shaw, Bertrand Lavier and more recently of Steven Parrino, John M Armleder as well as Sylvie Fleury.

Since 2005, Mamco is managed by a public foundation (Fondamco) holding the Mamco Foundation as well as the City and the State of Geneva, and is directed by Christian Bernard.
